Longmont High Varsity Softball defeated John F Kennedy Saturday, October 13th. This game was the second in the day at the regional tournament for the Trojans. Coming off a bitter 7-0 loss to Weld Central (no.15) their first game, the Trojans (no.18) transformed into a force to be reckoned with for the second game. They were not going to repeat history of two losses in regionals to end their season. Instead they came back and defeated Kennedy 17-2 in four innings. Kennedy scored the first run of the game in the first inning, but the Trojans retaliated to double that in the second inning. They persisted with their offense to score four more in the third inning and really put the hammer down with 11 runs in the fourth inning, sealing the victory.
Highlights include: Kayla Gumeson (3B) went 3-4 at the plate with three runs and three RBI. She also had one putout and two assists on the field. Angeline Mitchell (P) had an impressive game with two homeruns back-to-back with five RBI to hit 2-3. She struck out four batters in four innings, allowed just one hit, two runs, and faced only 15 batters from the mound. Katrina Sabol (CF) managed to be hit by pitch twice and walked to reach base every at bat. Katie Alaniz (1B) woke her bat up to have two RBI and hit 2-3. She had eight putouts at first base. Ashley Dillow (2B) went 1.000 at the plate with a hit by pitch and two singles ripped through the infield to be three of the Trojans’ runs.
The Trojans played one more game after Kennedy against Weld Central again and won.
The Trojans will be in Aurora on Friday playing Erie High School at 12:15pm at Aurora Sports Complex. This will be Longmont High’s first time playing the in the state championship tournament in 15 years.
